And now a friendly public service announcement.

Hello potential readers.

No doubt some of you are aware of a piece of gossip that has come to the attention of the social networked masses of the world. I speak of nothing other than the so called "change to the zodiac".

In simple terms, the zodiac most of us have been familiar with up until recently has been based on old calculations of positions, however due to shifts in the positions of the stars from the perspective of Earth, the zodiac no longer fits these positions. Further more, there is a thirteenth constellation belonging in the zodiac, forming the star sign 'Ophichius', the snake bearer. Relatively recently, the global intercommunication services collectively known as 'social networking' and based in sites such as Facebook and Twitter have experienced a wave of excitement over the uncovering of this information, leading people to believe their fates have changed, the zodiac has moved and twisted around them. Further rumours have sprouted that this only affects people born after 2009.

To cut it all short, this is a load of bull s***.

To clarify, I am not stating that the zodiac and its meaning are false. However, one must consider this: nothing has changed. That the modern zodiac is not technically aligned to the stars is not new information. Scientists, astronomers and astrologers alike have, generally speaking, been long aware of this. This is not new. At all. Further more, Ophichius is even less new. The Mayans, when divining the zodiac, back when it was aligned, outright chose not to use Ophichius because they wanted twelve and not thirteen.

So why the big fuss? Sociology. People are stupid. Not as individuals, but as a collective. This is only enhanced by the mass connectivity and limited physical response through the digital medium. So when a (probably small) group of people find out something that is new to them, it has a potential to spark a chain reaction, spreading like wildfire throughout the hordes milling around in social networking. It's Chinese Whispers, except everybody ends up screaming simultaneously.

So no, internet, you don't have to pawn your themed jewelery or surgically remove your tattoo. Nothing has changed. GET THE F*** OVER IT!

Yours rantingly,
~AR

  1. How do you have time to write this but not a comic?

On an entirely different not, loving the chinese whispers analogy.
